SFA bands to present joint concert

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Symphonic and University Bands in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The program includes a wide range of musical works for bands, including marches, tributes to America and contemporary pieces.

The University Band will open the concert with Rick KirbyÕs ÒAn American Fanfare,Ó which uses strains of ÒAmericaÓ in a fast and energetic manner, and Sam HazoÕs ÒChorus Angelorum,Ó a moving work about a chorus of angels accompanying two souls to the next world, explained David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands.

Graduate student Corey Daniel of Lafayette, La., will guest conduct the fanfare, and Spring senior Justin Allen will guest conduct HazoÕs piece.

Under Campo's baton the band will present Leroy Anderson's "Ticonderoga March" and Johnnie Vinson's three-movement "Suite for Winds and Percussion."

The Symphonic Band's portion of the program will feature new pieces and recent transcriptions of works written by modern American composers, explained Brett A. Richardson, SFA assistant director of bands and the ensemble's conductor.

For its opening, the band will perform Paul RichardsÕ "Medium Funk Prelude," which Richardson describes as an "exciting, energetic, very 'groove-based' work."

The band will also present Carter Pann's "Hold This Boy and Listen" and Kenneth Singleton's 2002 transcription of Aaron Copland's "The Promise of Living" from his opera, "The Tender Land."

The concert will close with Henry Fillmore's march "His Honor," guest conducted by Daniel.
