SFA Wind Ensemble concert to contrast old and new music

November 10, 2009

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Wind Ensemble will present "Timelines: a Contrast of Old and New" at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

"Through this concert we hope to show the connections between music of different time periods," said Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands and the ensemble's conductor.

"We will play a march for winds written by W.A. Mozart in 1782 and follow it with a John Phillip Sousa march written in 1924 so that the audience can hear how marches evolved over 140 years," Allen continued.

Brett A. Richardson, SFA assistant director of bands, will guest conduct "Canzoni Primi Toni" by Giovanni Gabrieli in 1597. The Wind Ensemble will follow that piece with "Cathedrals," which was composed by Kathryn Salfelder in 2007.

"We are pairing these two pieces because Salfelder incorporated portions of Gabrieli's work in hers," Allen explained.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Dr.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
