Registration slated for SFA Music Preparatory Division instruction
August 6, 2009
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will register students for private lessons, classes and ensembles from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.
"We invite both children and adults to explore the wonderful world of music through our numerous offerings," said Pat Barnett, division director. "Private lessons in cello, classical guitar, harp, piano, Suzuki violin/viola, traditional violin/viola, voice, flute, and percussion are among the options from which to choose. Rock guitar, taught by Herbert Midgley, is a new offering this fall. Other instrumental study can be offered by request."
Private lessons taught by upper-level music preparatory faculty will begin the week of August 24, and those taught by SFA student teachers will begin the week of Sept. 7.
The division also offers musicianship classes to strengthen students' music theory knowledge, Barnett explained. These 15-week courses will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays and begin the week of Aug. 31.
Kindermusik classes for newborns through 7-year-olds will also begin the week of Aug. 31. Certified Kindermusik teachers Karen Greer and Erin Tang will teach four different age-appropriate classes.
"The Kindermusik early childhood music and movement program is based on the beliefs that every child is musical, every parent is the child's most important teacher and the home is the most important place for learning to take root and grow," Barnett said.
A 16-week adult piano class, taught by Dr. Ping-Ting Lan, will begin on Monday, Sept. 7. Many of the music preparatory classes and lessons will be held in the division's newly renovated facility at 3028 Raguet St. By late August, the division's office will also be located there.
