SFA professors endow accounting scholarships
August 5, 2009
Two Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members have endowed scholarships in conjunction with the Greater Texas Foundation's "2008 Removing Educational Barriers" matching-gift program.
Dr. Treba A. Marsh, director of the Gerald W. Schlief School of Accountancy, and Sharron M. Graves, assistant professor of accounting, were able to double their endowment principal by partnering with the foundation, thereby doubling future scholarship funds awarded to students. Accounting students with financial need who are classified as juniors or seniors will be eligible to apply for the funding.
Both faculty members have worked with SFA students through Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, the SFA Accounting Club and professional organizations such as the Texas Society of CPAs to promote the accounting profession.
"We have encouraged students to excel, become an asset to their employers and to give back something to the profession," Graves said. "We could think of no better way to encourage students and to set an example than to permanently endow scholarship funds."
