February 10, 2009
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Area 6- to 12-year-olds may register for an art class offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main Street in downtown Nacogdoches, as part of the Creative Art Saturday program.
Participants will view the kinetic works of Alexander Calder, including his famous circus performance, and create kid-friendly wire kinetic sculptures of their very own circus figures. The class will be taught by Dr. Marsh Blount, SFA assistant professor of art; Matthew Sutherlin, SFA instructor of art; and SFA art education majors.
The $5 registration fee covers the cost of materials. Parents may pre-register at The Cole Art Center during normal hours (12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday) or by e-mailing Blount at blountmarsh@sfasu.edu. Class size is limited to 20.
"We ask that parents escort the children to and from the classroom that is on the second floor of the center," Blount said. "Parents are also welcome, but not required, to stay."
