  • October 24, 1958 - Ralph W. Steen elected by the State Board of Regents as the Third President of SFA; assumed his position on November 1.
  • 1964 - New Student Center, the first of Steen's buildings, opened; Christmas receptions moved into the center.
  • 1965 Mrs. Gladys Steen died in her bed in the President’s House on September 21, 1965.
  • 1965-69 - Steen took steps to move SFA from college to university status; oversaw the peaceful integration of SFA.
  • 1960-1970s - Steen oversaw a rapid expansion of the campus and buildings: dorms in the 60s and classrooms in the 70s.
  • 1976 - Ralph Steen retires; assumed emeritus status with an office in the library which bore his name.
  • 1980 - Dr. Ralph Steen died on the steps of the Rusk Building.
