The Sawyers on the Vista, 1929

Sawyers

The Sawyers were organized in 1927. Their purpose was to establish a more enthusiastic school spirit among the students. Their motto: “For the Lumberjacks and SFA. Win-Lose-or-Draw.” The Sawyer always carried axe handles as their trademark, which they would pound in unison on the floor during athletic events. The noise of the crowd’s cheers, led by the yell leaders and the axe handle - toteing Sawyers, would rise to a feaverous pitch inside the all wooden building, according to Hazel Abernethy.

The Sawyers became a leading group in the social life of SFA, too. Their members took leading parts in many other campus activities. The Sawyers eventually became the modern-day fraternity Delta Sigma Phi. Delta Sigma Phi Members still carry axe handles to athletic events.
