'Cello Is the New Black' performance slated at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Cello Club with Evgeni Raychev in a recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Performers will include active Cello Club members playing with Raychev, School of Music faculty member, and his students, who will present the program "Cello Is the New Black."

In its second season, the Cello Club will perform works by J.S. Bach, Frédéric Chopin, David Popper, Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann and other renowned composers.

SFA jazz bands to perform tribute program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, the jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Directed by Dr. Gary Wurtz, professor of trumpet and jazz studies at SFA, the Swingin' Axes will perform a program in tribute to the Boss Brass, the premiere Canadian big band.

In Perspective production to feature SFA dance program, Repertory Dance Company


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's dance program and Repertory Dance Company will showcase senior choreographic works and company pieces in the Danceworks production, In Perspective, which premieres 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, on campus in the dance studio in the Lucille Norton Health and Physical Education Complex, Room 201.

A second showing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, with the final show planned for 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Tickets cost $5 for students, $8 for faculty and staff members and $10 for general admission.

Moon to perform with Orchestra of the Pines


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Orchestra of the Pines at Stephen F. Austin State University will welcome guest artists when the ensemble performs the program "Curtain Raisers" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Conducted by Dr. Gene Moon, director of orchestras at SFA, and guest conductors, the Orchestra of the Pines will present three well-known works, including Leonard Bernstein's Overture to "Candide," Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor and Pyotr Illych Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor.

Students compete for scholarships, learn professional skills with new Passport Program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's Nelson Rusche College of Business recently implemented the Student Success Passport Program to help students develop their professional skills.

The Passport Program, which launched in early October, aims to help students hone their professional skills while competing for scholarships. Dr. Ann Wilson, interim associate dean for the Rusche College of Business, said the program received a gift that will allow the college to annually award $130,000 in scholarships.

SFA Gardens to host herbal soap seminar


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's SFA Gardens will host "Gifts from the Garden," a soap-making workshop from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building, Room 101 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches.

Participants will create a variety of herbal soaps while learning recipes and techniques used in the art of soap making. Workshop attendees also will leave with samples of their own luxurious soap creations.

SFA Gardens Lecture Series to feature pollinators and pests


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches.

Houston-based horticulturist Heath Lowery will present "Pollinator Update Plus Know What's Bugging You."

SFA's Music Prep students selected to all-region orchestras


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - All students of the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division who auditioned last month for the Region 4 and Region 21 middle school and high school orchestras were selected as orchestra members.

Auditions were held at the new Three Lakes Middle School in Tyler. Concerts for the middle school and high school orchestras will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, in Tyler.

Contemporary Guitar Ensemble to perform first SFA concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The new Contemporary Guitar Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present its first concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

"Led Zeppelin: Mastering Cross Genres with Bold Originality" features performances of "Kashmir," "Going to California," "When the Levy Breaks," and other Zeppelin favorites.
