BIG CELEBRATION IN PLAIN DEALING

In Its July 28, 1949 issue The Plain Dealing Progress reported that a gala day had been set for celebrating recent local achievements in Plain Dealing.

"Plain Dealing is to have what is planned to be the biggest day in her history when, on Monday, September 5th, a great barbecue and sports-fest will feature and celebration of the culmination of the greatest era of development and progressive accomplishment in the his try of this thriving little city of North Bossier."

"Among the outstanding developments and activities that will be on the card for the day's recognition will be the completion of the remodeling of the First State Bank and the celebration of the 28th anniversary of that thriving institution, the completion of the stadium and athletic field of the local high school, the opening of the Plain Dealing High School under the administration of G.H. Crawford, the establishment of the Lartex Feed and Farm Supply Co. as a wholesale firm, the beginning of hard surfacing of the Sarepta Highway, , State 70, and the initial steps of securing a bridge over Red River near Miller's Bluff."

"These and other recent expansions easily constitute the record of the greatest era of accomplishments in the history of this fast growing town and this projected celebration most assuredly deserves the most active support of every business and individual in this entire area, and from the enthusiasm shown at the Lions Club and Monday night's hurriedly called meeting, that result seems secured."

"John J. Doles has been selected as general chairman of the program and he has appointed several committees and will appoint others essential for the greatest success of the day. These committees, with the account of other developments, will be given in next week's paper."

"The one important factor just now is for everyone to help form a united front to help make the day the greatest event in this section's history."

As promised, the following issue of The Plain Dealing Progress' August 4, 1949 updated the plans for the September 5th event.

"The business men of Plain Dealing met Monday night and appointed committees to carry out the gala celebration and barbecue planned for Plain Dealing on Monday, Sept. 5. John J. Doles, president of the Plain Dealing bank, presided at the meeting."

"Commitments from local business men were very encouraging and plans are going forward in a well directed manner. Splendid reaction is being received from the public from a financial standpoint."

"Ladies of the community are asked to cooperate by furnishing home-baked cakes, pies and other foods."

"Chairman Doles and Bruce Cartwright were in Baton Rouge this week in the interest of the program. Several prominent speakers are in prospect to appear on the program."


The September 8th issue of the paper reported that many political figures including then Governor Earl Long attended the festivities, along with over 10,000 other people. It was reported that Governor Long promised a bridge over the Red River at Miller's Crossing.
