Peek into Panola
Along with much history in Panola County Texas, there are some rumors of haunted houses, ghosts and goblins.
Some strange things have been witnessed at an old farm house on Lake Murvaul which was originally a chicken house, I am told. The house was added on to several times and became a family dwelling place about 40 years ago. The history of the land includes battles with Indians, Mexicans, Spain and pioneer settlers, outlaws and slaves.
I personally have smelled pipe tobacco and no one I have known smoked or smokes a pipe. I have heard the back door open, smelled the lighting of a match, then the odor of a cigarette and the door closing. I have seen what seems to be fairies dancing, sparkling lights and even a disembodied head that was watching me. I have no clue who it was, but it somewhat resembled the Wizard of Oz master deceiver.
Once I heard a female voice ask, "Are you waiting?" No one was there and it sounded like it came from the living room. Days later, I learned my best friend had died that day. I think the voice could have been his wife's or maybe his Mother's, as I did not recognize it.
I have read that spirits like to be near the water, even dance on the ripples and are drawn to the sounds of tinkling bells and wind chimes.
Visiting Jefferson, I went on the Ghost Walk and witnessed a man unlocking the door to the bank. My grandson and the man standing just behind him went over to the door to be first in line to get inside. Both turned around with strange looks on their faces. The door was chained with a huge logging chain and no one was there. We checked it in daylight and there are no door or openings where someone could hide. I saw "the man" also. One of our pictures showed the same face in a broken out window as if he were watching us.
I have no explanation for these events, but do believe the spirit of mankind lives forever.
