"Going to the cemetery homecoming on the 4th of July was a highlight of the year. We looked forward to this gathering. We went to church and sang and sang. My papa led the singing and my sister, Nara, played the piano. After that we went outside and had our lunch. Mama packed a travel trunk with a lot of good food. Chicken and dressing and biscuits and pie are what I remember most. But there was so much food because there were so many of us. After lunch, the kids played and the adults visited. We went to the cemetery, too, and visited relatives' graves. But mostly I remember the singing and eating and playing. It was real holiday and treat."
