ATLAS - The Texas Historical Commission's searchable online database, which allows users to search by county for information and locations of Historic County Courthouses, National Regiser Properties, State Antiquities Landmarks, Historical Markers, Cemeteries, Museums, Military Sites, Sawmills, and Neighborhood Surveys.
THC - Texas Historical Commission's website which has information and resources for historical markers, cemetery preservation, historic sites, preservation, and information about its current projects.
The Handbook of Texas Online - The Texas State Historical Association's online encyclopedia that contains information about state and local history, written by historians.
NR - National Register Online offers information about properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, how to nominate a property, and information about preservation.
HABS - Historic American Buildings Survey began as a New Deal program that photographs and documents historic structures around the United States. The site is searchable by subject or location.
Sanborn Maps - Perry-Castaneda Library Sanborn Map Collection at the University of Texas. Sanborn maps were orignially created to estimate fire insurance liability, they now provide us with a resource to see how a town or structure grew and changed from year-to-year. This collection is searchable by city name and contains maps from 1877 through 1922, though the majority of cities only have a few of these maps available.
Local Resources
City of Nacogdoches Preserve America Grant - The City of Nacogdoches received the Preserve America Grant in 2008 to assist in preserving and interpreting the cemeteries around the city. This website documents the projects undertaken by the grant and resources for cemetery preservation.
Oak Grove Cemetery Grave Search - Searchable database created in conjunction with the Preserve America Grant to locate individuals buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department - The city department that oversees the historic sites in Nacogdoches such as the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot, the Sterne-Hoya House Museum, the Durst-Taylor House Museum, and Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. - A local organization that promotes Nacogdoches's historic sites by creating and hosting walking tours and hosting history based festivals.
ETRC - East Texas Research Center is the regional repository of East Texas. This archive houses document collections such as maps, photographs, books, manuscripts, as well as oral history collections. Its website contains a digital archive, with documents and oral histories that have been digitized and are available for viewing and downloading. The website also allows users to search for the location of collections within the archives so that they may be prepared with the information that they need upon arrival.
Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau- This site informs visitors of the history of Nacogdoches, sites of interest, lodging, and an events calendar.
Millard's Crossing Historic Village - A reconstructed village in Nacogdoches containing 19th Century structures that were rescued and relocated from locations across East Texas.
Stone Fort Museum- A replica of the original Old Stone Fort that was constructed by Antonio Gil Y'Barbo in the late-eighteenth century.
Cemetery Preservation Resources
Chicora Foundation, Inc. - The Chicora Foundation, Inc. is a heritage preservation organization that conducts archaeological research and works in preservation and conservation. Their website has information about cemetery preservation including cemetery cleaning and repairing and resetting stones.
NCPTT - The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training studies methods and products used in historic preservation to discover the least harmful ways to preserve resources such as cemeteries. The center takes this information and holds workshops to teach others their methods. Their website contains articles and videos of how to clean, repair, and reset gravestones.Association for Gravestone Studies Journal Markers - The publication 1979-present of the Association for Gravestone Studies, which has articles written by cemetery preservationists about methods used in cemetery preservation and the discoveries made when researching cemeteries. This journal is made available online by the University of Massachusetts Archives and Libraries.
