Why Rusche?

Why Rusche?

As a Lumberjack, there’s no limit to what you can achieve in the community or in your career – and you don’t even need to wait until after graduation. Our faculty members, current students and alumni are leaders, award winners and proud Lumberjacks for life. We’re honored to say that many Rusche College of Business graduates choose to give back to the university or to their communities, in addition to enjoying successes of their own.

College to Career Conference

Every year the Rusche College of Business hosts its College to Career Conference to bring industry professionals and alumni into the classroom. Past guests include individuals representing:

Amazon
Charles Pool Real Estate
Dell
Elliott Electric Supply
Hajoca
Lockheed Martin
Pilot Flying J
FedEx
Kohl’s
Walgreens
Austin Bank
Southwest Airlines

These panelists speak with students on a variety of business-related topics, including:

  • making a powerful impression
  • acing interviews
  • the first 100 days on the job
  • business ethics and integrity
  • personal branding
  • money management
  • communication
  • and international business tips.

This conference connects students to professionals while also introducing them to new industry topics.

Community impact

Volunteering is a great way to put business learnings into real-world practice. For example, student volunteers in the Marleta Chadwick Student Financial Advisors organization offer other students and the Nacogdoches community free financial advice. Focusing their efforts on people experiencing financial crisis, the volunteers assist with budgeting, credit card and debt management, identity theft and fraud.

Competitions

Rusche College of Business students excel in national and local competitions. During the annual American Advertising Federation-Houston Student Conference and Competition, SFA students from the Department of Management and Marketing, Department of Mass Communication, and the School of Art often find themselves on the first-, second- and third-place teams. This conference challenges students with creating an advertising campaign for a real client.

Mast Student Investment Roundtable

Students can earn course credit while learning how to invest by managing a real equity portfolio. In the Mast Student Investment Roundtable, students are responsible for all investment decisions and learn the practical side of analyzing industries and companies. Students turn their analysis into investment recommendations, which they present to their Roundtable classmates. Roundtable students then select those investments that are expected to have the greatest potential for growing the portfolio while also considering the possible risks that might cause harm to the portfolio. Roundtable students travel to compete against other universities' teams.

Program and faculty accomplishments

SFA’s Rusche College of Business has successfully achieved the extension of its business program accreditation by the prestigious AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. Globally, fewer than 5% of business colleges have achieved accreditation by AACSB, which places SFA’s Rusche College of Business in an elite category of business colleges worldwide.

Dr. Jason Reese, sports business program coordinator and associate professor, has been recognized with an SFA Teaching Excellence Award for being an outstanding faculty member for the Rusche College of Business. Reese has provided students with the opportunity to work with the Houston Texans to sell individual and group tickets to the Battle of Piney Woods game each fall, which pits SFA against Sam Houston State University at NRG Stadium, home of the Texans. Students also work with SFA Athletics to sell season, group and individual tickets to SFA football, basketball and baseball/softball games.

Dr. Mark Scanlan, economics professor, challenges and encourages students in the college by making economics fun. Through an online prediction game, Fredcast, developed by the Federal Reserve Bank, students predict four key economic variables. The game scores the students’ predictions and ranks participants after the real data is available. Students compete with each other to see whose prediction is most accurate. Scanlan was honored with a Bright Spot award by the university vice presidents, the Faculty Senate, and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
