Smith-Hutson Scholarship

Admissions & Aid

The Smith-Hutson Scholarship is intended for entering first-year and transfer students with established financial need and academic potential who are seeking an undergraduate degree from SFA.

Taking into account other scholarships that the student may receive and the student's and parents' financial resources, the Smith-Hutson Scholarship typically provides sufficient assistance to cover tuition, books, fees and reasonable living expenses on campus. First-year scholarship recipients have the option to live together in the same on-campus housing unit, Lumberjack Landing, unless commuting or living with family.

Requirements to apply

To apply for the Smith-Hutson Scholarship, you must:

  • be a legal Texas resident who is unmarried with no children
  • satisfy SFA's admission requirements
  • demonstrate financial need with a completed FAFSA
  • provide a personal essay describing career goals
  • provide two letters of recommendation
  • and be available for an in-person interview with the scholarship committee in April.

We encourage you to receive at least one letter of recommendation from an English or a mathematics teacher whose class you were enrolled during the past year.

How to apply

Complete SFA's general scholarship application. Once complete, you will be prompted to submit the outside scholarship application. This will give you access to apply for the Smith-Hutson Scholarship and submit all supporting documents.

Selection process

Smith-Hutson Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee that includes representatives named by the donor.

Maintaining eligibility

Students remain eligible to receive a Smith-Hutson Scholarship for a maximum of four years of undergraduate studies, provided recipients maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at SFA and complete a minimum of 30 semester credit hours toward their degrees each academic year.

If a recipient's GPA falls below 2.0 in any single semester, the scholarship is subject to termination.
