Liberal Studies

Each liberal studies degree is unique and tailored to the student’s interests. This allows students to align academic and career paths through imaginative fields of study. Alumni of this program have gone on to work in fields as diverse as human resources, the oil industry and public service or have pursued graduate degrees at institutions such as the Bush School of Government and Public Service. Other career options include politics, media, education, communication and finance.

Students complete a 39-hour major and a separate minor. Within the major, students explore a minimum of three subject areas. All students in this major must complete four consecutive semesters of the same foreign language plus an additional humanities class.

Your classes will allow you to expand your worldview more than you could imagine. Examine European studies through courses in political science, history, geography and the arts. Explore film through classes in English, theatre and art. Further your understanding of religion as you study philosophy, sociology and history.  Whatever the combination, in your final semester you will complete a capstone research project, which allows you to collaborate with faculty members from all fields comprising the major.

Important note if you are interested in designing your own major:

Students must make an appointment with the director of the Division of Multidisciplinary Programs to begin designing their major for the Bachelor Arts in liberal studies. Degree plans can only be officially entered after the division director has worked with the student to approve the plan of study.

Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies

The Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies allows students to pursue their passions and interests. Course requirements for this degree include at least four semesters of a foreign language, three hours of humanities coursework, an approved curriculum from multiple disciplines or academic departments, and an additional academic minor.
