NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Celebrate our fine, feathered friends and learn bird-identification skills at the Great Backyard Bird Count at Stephen F. Austin State University from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 15, at the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

This family outdoor event is sponsored by SFA Gardens and Nacogdoches Naturally and is designed to increase knowledge and appreciation of birds and birding. A variety of fun, family-friendly activities will be available, including "Bird Olympics" and bird-related crafts.

In addition, there will be opportunities to take part in the national Great Backyard Bird Count. Participants will count birds on walks guided by experts from the Pineywoods Audubon Society. Winter is the ideal time for bird watching, and the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center is a haven for local birds.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, along with Bird Studies Canada and many international partners. The Great Backyard Bird Count is powered by eBird. The count is made possible in part by founding sponsor Wild Birds Unlimited.

Light snacks will be served. Families may come and go throughout the morning. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Cost for the event is $10 per family. For more information, call (936) 468-5586 or email lemonkb@sfasu.edu.
