Families can get hands-on gardening experience at Gardening 101 this Saturday at SFA.

Stephen F. Austin State University Gardens will host a beginning gardening class for the whole family from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, in Room 110 of the SFA Agriculture Building on Wilson Drive.

Dawn Stover, SFA master horticulturist, will present a Gardening 101 seminar for parents to give them the information and confidence needed to start a small backyard garden. Topics covered will include site location, soil amendments, raised bed options, what and when to plant, harvesting, and fun gardening ideas for the kids.

While the adults are learning gardening basics, the children will do hands-on gardening activities with the SFA Nacogdoches Naturally staff. During the second part of the morning, families will come together for a veggie taste sampler and an opportunity to plant a take-home project. In addition, a limited number of cool season plants will be available for purchase by participants. Weather permitting, the event will conclude with a short tour of the vegetable and herb sections of the SFA Arboretum garden.

Now is the time to get a jump on springtime vegetable gardening! Create a family garden experience for the whole family to enjoy together.

The cost for the event, which includes all supplies, will be $10 per family.
