NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will again be offering art workshops for area 6- to 12-year-olds from 2 to 4 p.m. once a month at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
Registrations are now being accepted for this year's first Creative Art Saturday to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. Participants will create paper art sculptures under the direction of SFA art faculty members Dr. Marsha Blount and Matthew Sutherlin. Assisting them will be SFA art and education majors.
"The program is designed to provide a quality enrichment experience for area children," said Blount. "Each month we'll offer different art activities and educational projects that will allow the students to investigate, interpret and analyze art."
Future fall workshops will cover topics such as ceramics, perspective drawing, puppets, drawing with text, pen and ink, and watercolor. The year will culminate with an exhibition in May.
The $5 registration fee covers the cost of materials and benefits the SFA Art Education Association. Participants can cover the costs of all workshops by purchasing a year's membership in the Children's Friends of the Visual Arts for $40.
Parents may pre-register at The Cole Art Center during normal hours (12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday) or by e-mailing Blount at firstname.lastname@example.org. Class size is limited to 20.
"We ask that parents escort the children to and from the classroom that is on the second floor of the center," Blount said. "Parents are also welcome, but not required, to stay."
