NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Local middle and high school band students still have time to register for Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's summer band camps held on the SFA campus.
Students entering seventh and eighth grades are eligible for the middle school camp to be held Sunday, June 7, through Friday, June 12, and students entering ninth through twelfth grades can register for the high school camp to be held Sunday, June 14, through Friday, June 19.
At the beginning of each camp, students will audition for placement in one of five bands, each of which will present a final concert on the last day of camp. Admission to these concerts is free and open to the public.
"Ours is recognized as one of the best summer band camps in all of Texas," said Gary Wurtz, SFA associate professor of music and camp director. "The campers spend time every day with an expert on their instrument, make new friends from all around the state and have a genuinely good time improving their musical skills."
"And because we offer a commuter price for our local students, they can benefit from all of the instruction at a huge discount," Wurtz continued.
Regular registration for the camps, which includes lodging and meals, is $425. Commuter registration, which includes lunches, is $225.
"We originally set Friday, May 29, as our deadline for middle school campers," said Donna Cornwall, administrative assistant for the SFA band program. "However, we can extend that deadline for our commuters to Wednesday, June 3. High School students have until Friday, June 5, to register."
