SFA Madrigal Singers to perform in concert


The SFA Madrigal Singers, well known throughout East Texas for its concert repertoire that includes music from the Renaissance to present day, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in Cole Concert Hall.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Madrigal Singers, a select group of 16 singers from the Stephen F. Austin State University A Cappella Choir, will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in Cole Concert Hall.

Included on the program is Clément Janequin's "La Guerre," the most famous piece from the chanson, or songs that tell a story, genre, according to Dr. Tim King, director of choral activities at SFA and of the ensemble. "In this song, written to celebrate the 1515 Battle of Marignano, the audience will hear the call to war and actual vocal sounds to depict the battle."

The Madrigal Singers will also present Benjamin Britten's "Five Flower Songs," written for the silver anniversary of nature lovers Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst, and John Rutter's "Birthday Madrigals, a lively collection of Shakespearian poems set to jazz music, King explained.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music as part of the Concert Series. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Dr.
