SFA faculty to present flute concertos recital

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Stephen F. Austin State University music faculty members Christina Guenther, flute, and James Pitts, piano, will present a recital of flute concertos at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The duo will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Concerto in D Major" and Carl Nielsen's "Concerto for Flute."

Mozart's work is actually his transcription of his own oboe concerto and one of the standards in the flute repertoire, said Guenther. "Nielsen's is one of the big standards of the 20th century, and its two movements range from powerful and aggressive to lyrical and sweet."

Guenther, an assistant professor of music, joined the SFA faculty in 2005. She has appeared as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician throughout the United States and Central and South America and has performed with the Shreveport (La.), Marshall (Texas) and Tallahassee symphony orchestras.

While studying at Florida State University, where she earned her master's and doctoral degrees in flute performance, Guenther was the woodwind director of the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra. She has served as a high school flute clinician in Florida and Texas and co-founded the Austin Summer Flute Camp in 2002.

Pitts has been a member of the SFA faculty since 2000, maintaining an active schedule as a collaborative pianist in faculty, guest artist and student recitals, competitions, auditions and master classes. He has also served as the pianist for the SFA opera, Choral Union and Women's Choir and taught applied piano, class piano and a two-semester survey of piano literature.

The Waco native received his undergraduate degree at Baylor University and earned both his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas. He has appeared as a soloist with the Waco Symphony, Central Texas, Houston Civic, North Dallas Symphony and University of North Texas Orchestras.

Tickets to the recital are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
