As an interior design major, you’ll learn to create attractive, safe, harmonious and healthful spaces that promote human well-being physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Your studies will provide a foundation to pass the National Council of Interior Design Qualifications and other licensing requirements that recognize your proficiency in interior design principles and commitment to the profession.

A degree in interior design prepares you to work in a variety of exciting, creative settings, including interior design and architectural firms, design consulting offices, corporate design departments and government agencies. Interior design majors go on to careers as residential designers, kitchen and bath specialists, furniture designers, facilities managers, lighting designers, space planners and more.

SFA interior design faculty have expertise as design practitioners, educators and researchers, which provides well-rounded educational exposure for students. To ensure quality instruction, studios average a student-instructor ratio of 15-to-1.

BS in Interior Design
Studies emphasize the functional and aesthetic aspects of design, providing a well-rounded education that equips interior design majors for success as emerging professionals.
Minor in interior design
Students with majors in other departments may choose a minor in interior design by completing 18 or 19 hours, including nine in advanced courses.
Accreditation
The interior design program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Interior Design is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, www.accredit-id.org, 206 Cesar E. Chavez Ave SW, Suite 350, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
The CIDA-accredited program prepares students for entry-level interior design practice, for advanced study, and to apply for membership in professional interior design organizations. The Bachelor of Science in Interior Design granted by Stephen F. Austin State University meets the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (NCIDQ Exam). It typically takes a full-time student taking approximately 15 credits per semester four years to complete the degree program. Transfer students taking approximately 15 credits per semester can typically complete the degree program in three years.

Of the first-time, full-time undergraduates enrolled at SFA in Fall 2021, 73.2% returned in Fall 2022.

Acceptance into Graduate Programs
In Fall 2022, 12 students applied and 12 were admitted to the MS in Human Sciences graduate program.
In Spring 2023, 8 students applied and 7 were admitted to the MS in Human Sciences graduate program.
Job Placement Rates
100% of students who graduated in 2022 are employed in interior design or a related profession.
