Students in the School of Human Sciences can choose from a variety of programs, including construction management, hospitality administration, merchandising, interior design, human development and family studies, nutrition and more. Each program includes opportunities for internships and hands-on learning.

Lumberjack Spotlight

  • Adding transformative learning experiences to the menu

    Four faculty members from the School of Human Sciences were instrumental in bringing the Lumberjack Express food lab to campus. They include Dr. Chay Runnels, hospitality administration program coordinator and professor; Dr. Donna Fickes, clinical instructor; Todd Barrios, chef instructor; and Justin Pelham, clinical instructor. The lab is taking SFA’s hospitality administration program to the next level.

  • Launching a nonprofit to serve girls in Kenya

    Dr. Flόra Faragό founded an organization to help girls thousands of miles away in Kenya. Faragό and her colleagues launched the U.S.-based nonprofit organization Friends of the Girl Child Network. This organization provides resources to the GCN in Kenya to support and expand its operations and work on issues of gender justice.

  • School of Human Sciences alumnus receives design award

    Sherine Sebastian, a graduate of SFA's School of Human Science's interior design program, and her team at Joanie Wyll and Associates Inc. received second place in the Design Ovation Awards, awarded by the American Society of Interior Designers' Dallas chapter.

    During her time at SFA, Sebastian interned at SFA’s Design Center and was involved with the redesign of the School of Honors along with some other projects on campus.

  • Exploring integrative and functional medicine

    Gabriella Deleski earned a Master of Science in human sciences with a dietetics focus from SFA. Now a registered dietitian at Vitality Weight Loss and Wellness Institute in Plano, Deleski uses the integrative and functional medicine principles she learned during her dietetic internship at SFA when helping her clients prevent and treat obesity. “My education in integrative nutrition from SFA allows me to treat my patients holistically and provide them with care that is uniquely suited for them.” Learn more about Gabriella's work.

Construction Management students building tiny homes
  • As the only one of its kind in Texas, the Lumberjack Express is a learning laboratory that provides students in the School of Human Sciences a taste of the real world. Students use the lab to cook and serve meals.
  • Lights. Camera. Cannes. Students from the hospitality administration program travel each summer to France to participate in the annual Cannes International Film Festival, which celebrates cinematographic art with various red-carpet events, workshops, and screenings.
  • Food, nutrition and dietetics students partner with the East Texas Food Bank to host the annual Cooking Matters Program, an informative and interactive course addressing nutrition and budgeting tips.
  • Members of SFA’s chapter of the Phi Upsilon Omicron national honor society for family and consumer sciences organize annual service projects to help children living in poverty.
  • SFA students in the hospitality administration program can study abroad at the Business and Hotel Management School in Switzerland during their junior year thanks to an exchange agreement between the two institutions.
  • Each semester, interior design seniors showcase their skills during the Essence of Design exhibit. Students create a display that reflects their personality, skills and design philosophy.
  • Earning course credit and hands-on experience, construction management students at SFA built four tiny homes at Village Nac, a faith-based community for residents facing chronic mental health and homelessness issues. The semester-long project was offered through the School of Human Sciences and funded by a grant from SFA’s Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation.

  • Laura Aguilar

    Laura Aguilar

    Laura, an interior design student, interned with PDR Corporation in Houston. She worked on a materials library, assisted architects, helped with space planning and material consulting and attended client meetings. “The way our interior design program is organized really prepares us for the real world, which I learned last summer during my internship,” Laura said. “I have received a lot of professional exposure during my time here.”

    Kacey Creel

    Kacey helped teach Cooking Matters participants. The program, a partnership between the School of Human Sciences and the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler, is designed to help curb high levels of food insecurity in East Texas.

  • Haley Paz

    Haley Paz

    Haley worked as a research assistant on a body image and gender study, which earned her Top Scholar honors at SFA’s Undergraduate Research Conference.
